the mandarin spoken in china is different than the one spoken here no? It's a bit kasar. In beijing 3 years ago, one time I thought the bus driver was arguing with the parking attendant--turned out he was asking for directions. Everywhere ppl spoke rather kasar. Macam nak gaduh aje. Takut I. Even fruit seller pun kasar dgn customer. Terus I kensel nak beli. Jebon sungguh.

U pon perasan the difference of them people speaking mandarin in the main land and our chinese brethren eh? I pun penah raised questions to some of my chinese frens whether or not they fully understand the common mainland mandarin with thicker rrrrr and all. They too notice it and they said they also need to listen carefully. Our malaysian chinese speaks mandarin a lot softer. The cantonese ones memang loud sikit laa serupa those hongkies.
But those who speak slightly kasar doesnt mean they are kasar in nature. I used to hear my exgreek housemate speaking on the phone as if she was quarelling or something and it turned out that its just the way greek ppl express themselves. Like italians too....and us egyptians (err..as i am half egyptian, we tend to speak a bit louder with family members even in public)
Btw apparently those tamil ppl in tamil nadu also speak lagi kasar than our tamil counterpart so as my tamil frens told me.

Speaking of Chinese dialects and accents, my late Nenek who was Hokkien thought the Cantonese speak very kasar and are LOUD. But I guess every territory/tribe in different countries/land have similar prejudices. In NL for instance, the south where I live are known to be *finer* hence speak in finer, softer, more sing song Dutch compare to the North. And because I have lived on this part of NL and learnt the language here, I speak with the south accent and have problems with the North way of speaking and pronouncing.

Ok on a serious note, i've only been to Amsterdam and nearby area, so I dunno much on the softer, deeper Dutch accent there. But I do know that Flemish dont really like to be compared with the french belgium and the Dutch too?
