More on protests against the knighthood conferment

Hmm....why is it that this news does not appear in any of the local papers including latest updates but already published by Reuters World News just over 1 hour ago???

And of course, since it is part of the PAS members street demo in front of the British Embassy, this incident was also reported in their website, Harakah Daily.

Here's an excerpt of the news:

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) -
Supporters of Malaysia's hardline
Islamic party protested outside the British embassy on
Wednesday against the award of a knighthood to Salman Rushdie,
whose novel the "Satanic Verses" outraged Muslims worldwide.

Chanting "Destroy Salman Rushdie" and "Destroy Britain,"
some 30 members of the opposition Parti Islam se-Malaysia urged
Britain to withdraw the honor or risk the consequences.

"This has tainted the whole knighthood, the whole hall of
fame of the British system," party treasurer Hatta Ramli told
reporters after the party handed a protest note to embassy
officials.

"The British government must be responsible because it has
created a sudden feeling of anger not just on Salman Rushdie
but on the British government," he said. "They have to bear the
consequences." he said.

About 40 policemen, including a dozen armed with batons,
stood by. A spokesman at the British High Commission was not
immediately available for comment.

Rushdie, whose book prompted late Iranian leader Ayatollah
Ruhollah Khomeini to issue a 1989 fatwa death warrant against
him for blasphemy, was awarded a knighthood last week for
services to literature in Queen Elizabeth's birthday honors
list.

*****************************************************************

Anyways, this knighthood award has been gaining a mixed reviews even amongst the British themselves. But somehow, organizing street demo by chanting "hancur Salman" ( destroy Salman) and "Jahanam Britain" (Go to Hell, Britain) shows the typical emotional response from the hardliners just like their Indonesian brothers. But of course, those Indonesian hardliners go way over the board, rather on the extreme end by burning things, destroying valuables or anything along the way just to accentuate their anger demonstration.

Why are they chanting "Jahanam Britain" for? Why the country itself? There are like over 3 millions of their muslim brothers and sisters there and they are also british. Why cant they write: "We stand united against this knighthood conferment" or something like that on some banner? Typical hysterical act.

Oh and by the way, I need to learn on how to post the exact photo-feed of the online news on my blog. Can anyone help me here? Zewt, Idlan, Zaki, anyone?

exact photo feed? why dont you just copy the photo down... use microsoft paint to put in the address that you took the photo from... and then post it the usual way?

as for this issue... no wonder i see some of my malay blogger friends talking about this. honestly, i am aware of this knighthood and i dont quite care. but to actually protest here in malaysia in front of the british embassy and shouting jahanam britain is quite... inmmature.

Zewt

Not the photo but the exact copy-image of an excerpt of a webpage. For eg, let say i'm copying a piece of your writing work and paste it on my web to retain the exact image originality of it. All i know is to save a photo and copy-paste the text.

Yup, u r absolutely right on the way they did the demo. To me, nothing wrong with holding a road demo as long as it's done in a more appropriate manner displaying a politically correct words , not some curses and profanities.

Knighthood? Hmmm... I hardly give a dang!! Hehehe... But still, it's good that you post this entry. In fact, it was also featured last night over the Star News Asia.

It's understandable to be easily overcome by emotion when something like this happens. But once our rationality and maturity knocks back in to our minds, then we should not transfer such anger on banners and during street demos. We should plan well on how to effectively relay our feelings and opinions over the whole thing.

Also, why say something like 'risk the consequences'? What? We Malaysians are aspired to become terrorists too? Na'uzubillah...

Abdun ,

Embarrassing kan, when these raucous hardliners mouthing stuff like that. Apa faedah yg depa dapat selain drp mengeruhkan lagi nama negara?

What was even funnier was when reuters put malaysia and taliban side by side on their main headline. Apsal la kita kasi peluang people like that to make fun of our country?

Hei doc,

First and foremost I wud like to say thanks for dropping a detailed and interesting comment in my blog earlier on my post abt my SIL's passing.

Secondly, although it is a bit too late, CONGRATS dear on ur official graduation. How I envy you, u r in ur early 30s, yet u already managed to clinch ur 1st doctorate degree (more to come right dear?).

Now back to your entry on the Salman Rushdie's knighthood here. I am not against nor applauding the knighthood conferment. Well, diff people look at it from diff perspective. The British are looking at his overall contribution on the many great (izzit?) novels/books he has written, and we the Muslims are maybe quite emotionally focusing on only that particular damaging book. But, how can we the Muslims not suspect the perceived ulterior motive behind it, especially amidst all these terrorist labeling / branding ...I dunno. Having said all these, I definitely agree that street-demonstration with labels like "Hancur Britain" is not the way to express our sentiments.

Lastly, u can always utilise Reuter' RSS feeds facilities right?

because it's too long. 'Jahanam Britain' sounds much better and more dramatic too!!!
hahaha

i agree with u. their typical response is to over react. but then again, other people in other countries also make demonstrations like these against all issues in their countries, nobody brand them terrorists or put their pix side by side with the talibans. makes u wonder eh?

Hi Manal,

These days in general a big majority of our people do not read to get to the bottom of things. They prefer to believe hearsay. With this attitude, they are rather reactive, thus such incidents.

I agree with NJ, the knighthood was perhaps conferred to him based on his overall literary contribution...but yet again, of course there is the nagging suspicion too due to some nasty incidents in the past with his one particuloar book that cause such a stir. We will never know.

what about print screen, manal? 'FN' + 'F11', then paste onto paint or something. you can crop out picture then.

I saw the news on Star News Asia. I wasn't aware though whether it was aired on our national TV. I havent been watching much of the news. I don't know why.

Dear NJ ,

1. My pleasure.

2. Errr....indeed more to come in terms of workloads, responsibilities and so on. It can get quite exciting and depressing too and tiba2 i felt like peter parker's famous advice from his late uncle ben (on becoming a spiderman): with greater power, comes greater responsibilities. I'm still learning so many things and at the same time, i am under a certain level of expectation ( a bit high now, i reckon, sigh) on the job performance. At least, my colleagues are helpful lot!

3. Though i do not think that highly of him, some of his works excluding that Satanic Verses of courses, are highly acclaimed. On the surface, those ulterior motives and the consequences of selecting him for such award are reprehensible knowing his infamous fatwa on his head. Yet, and i personally feel that the british awarding board was probably romancing with the what-ifs be it the positive or negative issues. Even though one would negate such decision on the account of his controversial statements and published materials, his bravado to have done such provocative things may somewhat overruled everything else.

Had he any regretful feelings towards what he had done, Rushdie would follow what Benjamin Zephaniah did when the latter rejected his OBE to protest the british empire glorification. But, he bit the bullet, and was all bright-eyed. He prolly even jilat his own critics towards the british on receiving such a knight status.

Could he be a scapegoat of the british system?

4. Not a bad idea. As i am still learning this whole RSS thing, i may look into it. Thanks!

Dear Sue ,

Dah memang terang2 depa tak suka, so whatever we may wanna condemn would be taken very seriously under the terrorist tag.

And pasai tu la kita kena bijak bermain kata or something like that.

I think it's typical malaysian la to use few words to describe many things.

Hi kak ruby ,

It's all bit political, dont u think? As much as his works get praised and all, he is in such a position that will cause more disagreement than anything else. On top of that, he's now a new yorker.

A sir is not an imam or a saint or anything like that, right?

hey karin ,

What is FN?

I tried the "print preview" and the "send page by email". But as i copy paste it on the powerpoint for eg, it didnt really work well.

ManaL said...

dear Ija,

The Star only mentioned those uproars and protests in countries like pakistan and iran and nothing was really said on the msian road demo.

Talking about scrutinized press freedom.

ManaL said...

Err...friends, haza (or mr.haxa does the blog) has just shown me how simple it is to get an exact photofeed of the screen. Karin, yep, i used the printscreen button but dunno how to do next. Now i know that once u hit that button, u open the Paint and click on edit and then paste. Voila!!! new lesson learnt!

That home part reminds me of another fren of mine who's also doing her masters far north in beppu. She stays home with her 2 kids a lot more than going to her uni lately.

And Rad knew another old schoolmate of mine who then checked my blog and subsequently emailed me. Nice linkings kan?
